30 Years of Throwing Lead Downrange

The Otero Practical Shooting Association (OPSA) is a non-profit practical shooting club based in La Luz, New Mexico. Founded in 1995, we began with Cowboy Action matches and have since become a key part of the Sidney Paul Gordon Shooting Range. We host four monthly matches—USPSA, PCSL, .22NRL, and our Intro Fun Match—welcoming competitors of all skill levels. New shooters will be introduced to safety rules and the basic structure of a practical shooting match. We look forward to seeing you there!

What is Practical
Shooting?

Practical Shooting is a dynamic firearms sport that challenges competitors to shoot quickly and accurately while navigating courses that simulate real-world scenarios. Unlike static target shooting, practical shooting involves movement, multiple targets, reloads, and problem-solving under time pressure. Scoring balances speed and precision, encouraging shooters to develop both technical skill and strategic thinking.

The most recognized organizations are USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) and its international body IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation), as well as PCSL (Practical Competition Shooting League) and IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association). Competitors use handguns, rifles, or shotguns and are classified into divisions based on equipment. Practical shooting emphasizes safe gun handling, athleticism, and marksmanship—all in a competitive, fast-paced environment.
